Milton

Milton is the county seat of Santa Rosa County, twenty-three miles northeast of Pensacola on the Blackwater River. About 10,000 people live inside the city limits, with another 30,000 spread through the unincorporated areas of Bagdad, East Milton, Pea Ridge, and Allentown. The Blackwater is one of the cleanest sand-bottom rivers in the country, which is how Milton earned the title Canoe Capital of Florida.

The city runs along the river. The Milton Riverwalk, the historic Imogene Theatre, and the Santa Rosa County Courthouse anchor downtown. The Bagdad Mill site park preserves the old lumber-town footprint along the east bank. Adventures Unlimited, Blackwater River State Park, and the public access points draw paddlers, tubers, and fishermen on weekends from March through October.

Naval Air Station Whiting Field, four miles north, is the largest pilot training base for the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. Roughly 1,200 student pilots a year pass through Whiting. The throughput keeps the local rental market full and turning. Milton's housing runs cheaper than Gulf Breeze and Pace, with single-family homes on quarter-acre and half-acre lots being the standard. New construction continues north of US 90 toward Berrydale.
